Smoking, sex, food, caffeine, love, money, gambling, shopping, 12 step meetings, as well as endless possibilities are examples of sober vices. We all may have some vices before we even are addicted to drugs and alcohol but once that comes in to play everything else is usually out the window until we get clean. It is at this point that we feel we need to be rewarded and that is where our underlying sober vices come in; are they harmful? Uh….maybe.
I know we all get ambitious when we conquer something big; like getting clean but we may need to slow down and tackle one thing at a time. Getting clean is tough and a huge accomplishment so while we may have other addictions (harmful or not) that develop as a substitute, we must realize that recovery has to come first!
Now let’s get down to the harmful facts of sober vices; smokers are two to four times more likely to develop coronary heart disease, addiction to food can lead to obesity, diabetes could cause complications such as heart disease, stroke, vision loss, kidney failure, and amputations, hypertension leads to damaged organs, as well as several illnesses, such as kidney failure, aneurysms, heart failure, stroke, or heart attack, sex addicts are at risk for STD’s, gambling and shopping addictions can lead to financial problems, and the list goes on. Bottom line is addiction is dangerous in so many ways and it is hard for us to make healthy choices since the addicted brain craves short-term pleasure.
